Stop Paying for a Super Admin Inbox: How to Get Admin Emails for Free

If you are running Google Workspace for your business, you’ve probably been told you need a standalone “Super Admin” account for security.

And you may have set up an account using Cloud Identity Free – but there’s a catch: that account won’t have email access.

Enter Recipient Address Mapping.

This setting allows you to route all those critical Google billing alerts and security warnings directly to your personal daily inbox, completely free of charge.

What on Earth is Recipient Address Mapping?

Think of Recipient Address Mapping as a digital “postal redirect” managed at the front gate of your Google Workspace.

Instead of an email landing in a separate, paid inbox that you have to log into, Google’s mail servers intercept the message and say: “Ah, this is for the Super Admin. Let’s quietly deliver it straight to their primary business inbox instead.”

Step-by-Step: How to Set It Up in 3 Minutes

Here is exactly how to configure the redirect.

Step 1: Open the Admin Console

Head over to admin.google.com and sign in using your Super Admin credentials.

Step 2: Find the Setting

You don’t need to dig through endless menus. Click the search bar at the very top of the Admin Console and type “address map”.

From the dropdown options, click on ‘Email Forwarding Using Recipient Address Map’.

Step 3: Configure the Routing Rule

Scroll down the page until you find the section titled Email forwarding using recipient address map.

Click Configure (or click Add another rule if you’ve already got some routing rules set up).

Step 4: Give It a Clear Name

Name the rule something incredibly obvious so future-you knows exactly what it does. Avoid vague titles.

  • Good example: FWD Admin > [Your Name]
  • Bad example: Rule 1

Step 5: Add the Original Address

Click the Add button. Under the Address field, type in the full email address of the Super Admin account you want to redirect (e.g., admin@yourdomain.com.au).

Step 6: Map It to Your Daily Inbox

Under the Map to Address field, enter your primary daily work email address—the one you actually open every single day.

Step 7: Choose the Scope

You will see options to forward emails from “All incoming messages” or “External senders only”.

For an admin account, keep the default set to “All incoming messages”. This ensures you still get internal, system-generated alerts directly from Google’s own servers.

Step 8: The “Original Destination” Checkbox

You will see a checkbox that says “also route to original destination”.

  • If the admin account is active (licensed): Leave this blank to avoid getting double copies of the same email.
  • If the admin account is suspended (unlicensed to save money): Make sure this is unticked.

Step 9: Save and Apply

Click Save at the bottom of the window. Your new routing rule is now live!

How to Test Your New Setup

Before you walk away, let’s make sure it’s working.

Open up a completely separate email account—like your personal Gmail, Outlook, or ask a mate to help—and send a quick test email to your Super Admin address (admin@yourdomain.com.au).

Within a few seconds, that test email should land directly in your primary business inbox.
